Black Sparrow Jewelry

Tell me a little about yourself, Your name and location and any handmade or etsy affiliations you have.

Hello, my name is Whitney and I am the owner and designer of Black Sparrow Jewelry. I live in Daytona Beach, Florida and also spend time in Los Angeles, California. Though horses were my
first passion, over the years I grown more and more in love with
fashion.
Being able to bring fashion and history
together in my designs brings great joy to my life.

A side from creating things, what else do you do?

My horses take up a great deal of my time. I have competed at the national level shows across the country for most of my life.

Etsy is responsible for my newest obsession. Over the past few months I have fallen deeply in love with photography. California
has become my muse and I am itching fly back and satisfy my craving
for taking pictures.

What first inspired you to become an artist?

An obsession for fashion can put a dent in ones wallet. One day I made the decision to create my own beautiful accessories and be a bit more
frugal at the same time. Once I realized that I didn’t plan on slowing
down my creation process any time soon, I started my website to share
my designs with anyone who would show interest. After the website was
in place I luckily discovered Etsy. Life hasn’t been the same since.

Please describe to us your creative process, how, when and materials used.

I spend most weekends shopping at flea markets and antique shows. Once I find everything I need to supply my shop that week I head home to create. My creation
process is a matter of mixing and matching. Each unique vintage
find is given a friend, or two, or three
. Once a
piece is created I take pictures (longest process) and list the item
on my website and Etsy.

What handmade possession do you cherish most?

This changes every time I come home from a weekend of shopping. Haha. At this moment I am attached to a unique pocket size clock that I found in Long Beach, California. I hung it on
one of the most beautiful rosaries I have found
to date. I have never seen anything like it and I plan to
keep it for myself. Don’t know how I would ever part with it.

Name your top 5 books, movies, songs, musical artist/groups, And websites aside from Etsy or Artfire.

Books: The 10 Offences, Fearless (Max Lucado), Persuasion (Jane Austen), Mansfield Park (Jane
Austen)
, The Bible

Movies: Pearl Harbor (love it so much it could be my 1-3), Titanic, The Dutchess, Pride And Prejudice, Batman

Artists: The Fray, One Republic, Lifehouse, 3 Doors Down, Frank Sinatra

Songs: Most anything in the top 20!

Websites: ASOS.com, FreePeople.com, PleasureHorse.com, TopShop.com and of course BlackSparrowJewelry.com

What advice would you give to those who interested in selling handmade?

It’s probably obvious, but a picture is worth a thousand words so take pictures that speak positively about your work.

Also work towards quality, quality, quality! I have been disappointed many times by purchases I have made online because of the poor quality items
that I have received. I would rather spend 3 times as much to get
better quality.

Lastly, be sure you have a niche and be original!

What are your favorite handmade items to shop for?

I love handmade soaps and lotions. They always smell so much richer and cleaner than those that are mass produced.

What inspires you these days?

Simple things inspire me. I love history and searching for vintage treasures. I also spend a lot of time staying up to date with high fashion so that I can be aware of up
and coming trends. Although classic fashion never grows old.

How do you promote your work?

My website is a great resource. I use facebook and twitter. I also love to blog and promote my work through my blogs. http://www.blacksparrowjewelry.blogspot.com and http://blogginginstilettos.blogspot.com

In ten years I’d like to be….

I would like to be settled in a home with lots of history. I hope to be enjoying the company of my family, horses and all the other animals I accumulate up to that point. Designing
jewelry is something that I hope I am able to do for the rest of my
life. Inspiring people and making them feel good about themselves is a
passion, so I would love to be a successful personal stylist.

Black Sparrow Jewelry is truly one of my faves! Visit this fantastic artist's sites and get some fabulous jewelry of your very own!
