I grew up with live-in nannies. Not many nannies at once of course, I’m not a Kardashian, but one nanny at a time over the course of my childhood. My parents both worked full-time jobs and needed someone around the clock to help take care of me and my brother. I loved my nannies, they were like family to me and I cried as each one of them left to be closer to their real families.

So when it came time to make a decision for child care for my own daughter, you’d think I would choose a nanny. But I didn’t for many reasons, the biggest being that I’m super paranoid and couldn’t imagine finding one single person that I’d trust alone with my baby girl. Instead I found six people, and they’ve all been wonderful.

Everyone tells you about the benefits of daycare like early development of social skills, learning to share, blah blah blah. Sure, it’s all great, but do you know what I really love about daycare? I love that the women at daycare will do all the things for my child that I am just too lazy to do. And they will do it better than me.

Need to put your baby on a schedule? The women at daycare really have more experience with this than you, so let them do it. They enjoy it, trust me.
I love the fact that my daughter is now on a nap schedule because it means that I can make plans around that schedule. I love planning AND schedules!

Been a little lacking in the tummy time? That just sounds like a daycare type of activity.
I love that April was able to hone her tummy time skills at daycare because I could never, for the life of me, remember to do tummy time. In just a few weeks at daycare, April was rolling both ways and I stopped feeling guilty about the tummy time neglect.

Want to develop your child’s creative skills? It could be fun, sure, but think of how messy it could get. Maybe you should leave that to the women at daycare too.
I love that my 6-month-old comes home with arts and crafts. She made mother’s day and father’s day cards, a 4th of July onesie and a painting of a lobster. In a million years, I would never have thought to pull out some paints and make artwork with my infant daughter. It’s wonderful to have artwork to display proudly on the fridge and not have to deal with the mess of actually painting.

Lobster

How did my daughter know that lobster is my favorite?

It’s the little things that I love about daycare that make it such a wonderful place for my daughter. My daughter's daycare center hosts activities such as puppet shows and circle time and I love picturing her enjoying each of these activities. I am not sure if April would have these same experiences with a nanny but I’m 100% sure she wouldn’t have these experiences with me. If I were a stay at home mom, April would be engaged in activities such as watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta, which is almost like a puppet show only the voices are much, much louder. So it makes me feel good to know that, when I need to, I can turn to a half-dozen experienced ladies who really know how to make my baby happy.
