Paleo - The Food Of the Future Inspired By The Past

A great number of different diets have taken the world by storm. Some seem absurd while others seem entirely plausible. Each diet aims at weight loss or at health. One of these diets however stands out and this is none other than the 'Paleo diet’.

WHAT IS A PALEO DIET?

A Paleo diet is considered one of the healthiest diets because of the way it approaches food. The focus is on a nutritional approach which is said to help an individual stay lean and active.

Most of the food that we consume today is refined and processed. They are high in trans-fats and sugars. Paleo enthusiasts maintain that this is the cause of many of the degenerative diseases that we suffer from and rightly so.

UNDERSTANDING PALEO BLOCK BY BLOCK

Protein is the base of all growth in our body. In fact, you will frequently hear it being called the building blocks of the body. The Paleo diet suggests the use of lean protein which is extremely healthy. These lean proteins have various advantages from strong bones to the satisfaction after a meal.

Antioxidants, vitamins and minerals are as much a part of our body as proteins. Deficiencies of any of them can cause diseases. While many of the other diets fail to recognize the importance of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, the Paleo diet does not make the same mistake.

Healthy fats are the final component of the Paleo diet. Many diets shun fats completely. Fats however are essential to our growth and our health. Many vitamins are fat soluble and without fat they cease to be any use to us. The type of fats that you consume however is important. Healthy fats come from nuts, seeds, avocado, grass fed meat, fish and olives.

Choosing the right kind of oil is far more important that not using oil at all!

WHAT TO EAT: THE PALEO STARTER KIT

Starting off on a diet is always difficult. You make mistakes and so be ready for it. Don’t worry. It happens to the best of us. The easiest way to go about eating a Paleo diet is by remembering what you should not eat. The list includes cereal grains, legumes, refined sugar, dairy, salt, processed food and potatoes.

If you manage to avoid these food groups you automatically know what you can eat. Now let us look at what Paleo looks at as good and wholesome. These items include grass produce (lean meat), fish and seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruits, healthy oils, nuts and seeds. To be clearer on the healthy oils let me specify which oils: Olive, macadamia, coconut, avocado, flax seed and walnut.

Now while, the Paleo diet may take a lot of stuff of your plate (mainly cereals) it does provide you with an invaluable amount of variety. The science behind the choices is irrefutable and I’m sure that you can see it as clearly as the Paleo enthusiasts can.

Popular choices for food dishes include salads, steaks, soups and steamed vegetables.

PROOF THAT PALEO IS THE BEST!

Did you know that the word 'Paleo’ was taken from the word 'Paleolithic’? This means that the diet is technically based on what the Paleolithic man or the cave man ate. It does sound surprising and many may consider it a little backward but a lot of thought was put into formulating this diet.

The Paleo diet serves to remove all unhealthy components from our diet. The theory is that with the advancement of modern man, his food preparations and components have advanced too. These advancements have not been for the good.

Trans-fats, refined food and sugars may taste nice but they have an adverse effect on the body. Now one may say that the caveman lived a short life. Paleo enthusiasts will argue that it wasn’t due to the food he ate.

Several researches have been conducted on the Paleo diet and the results have been astonishing. Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease have been the arenas of medicine which have probably profited most from people eating healthy and here the Paleo diet is said to have worked wonders. The immune system of the body also responds marvellously to the diet which means that people who eat a Paleo diet are less likely to fall sick with infections.

All in all, the Paleo diet has been a boon although it takes us back in time and Ireland is host to some top-notch Paleo focused takeaway restaurants! Check out Dublin’s finest Paleo restaurant Bombay Pantry!
