There are several changes that occur when one is going through menopause. This includes stress and mood swings that can have an impact in healthy relationships. When one has daily routine and small adjustments in ones perspective, they are able to pull through without causing any strain in the relationship. There are several things that can be done to ensure that relationships are kept on an even keel.

The emotional effects of menopause include irritability, depression, and sadness, reduced motivation, mood swings, increased fatigue, aggressive, anxiety and tension and difficulty in concentration. These changes can have an effect on a healthy relationship.

1. Hormonal Changes

The emotional changes are usually brought by alterations in the level of hormones in the body. There is a reduction in estrogen and this has an effect on the chemical substances and brain neurotransmitters that control mood. Studies have shown that depression is linked to menopause but this has not been proven. However, the women who have suffered from depression may have a recurrence when they are going through menopause.

2. Physical and Sexual Changes

Many women have decreased libido and vaginal dryness during menopause. This may cause one to feel sexually undesirable. This is associated to reduce levels of testosterone in the woman’s body. Testosterone is a male hormone that is present in the woman’s body at low levels than it is in men.

3. Psychosocial Factors

There are many changes that occur in the woman’s body during menopause and this includes decreased libido. This is usually caused by hormonal changes but it can also be caused by other psychosocial factors that the woman is going through. A study that was done on heath of women revealed that decreased libido is usually caused by general problems that one is going thorough.

Taking antidepressants and using hormone replacement therapy can help to reduce the symptoms that are associated with menopause. However, it is advisable to make lifestyle modifications and this includes changing the overall outlook and daily routine. The following tips will help one to protect their relationship when going through menopause:

5. Exercise regularly and eat healthy foods

Studies show that a balanced and nutritious diet is important in maintaining health. It is advisable to use the nutrition center and the daily health diet that offers a primer to educate people on good nutrition.

6. Find your inner calm.

It is advisable to balance emotions and this helps one to keep calm. This can be done through meditation, yoga, reading, rhythmic breathing and prayer. This will help to maintain healthy relationships during menopause.

7. Avoid tranquilizers and/or alcohol.

It is advisable to avoid taking alcohol even though most studies show the benefits of taking moderate alcohol. This is because alcohol is an anti depressant that will not benefit an individual when one is going through troubling and frequent mood alterations. It is also advisable to avoid taking tranquilizers because they may cause unwanted side effects.

8. Get creative.

It is advisable to take part in activities that foster an increased sense of achievement and self esteem. The women who have a long standing desire to help in the synagogue, church or take part in charity work are encouraged to go ahead. One is encouraged to take part in activities like sports and other leisure pursuits that make one feel better about themselves.

9. Stay connected with your family, friends, and community

It is advisable to avoid withdrawing from family and friends. It is advisable to schedule the time for close family and friends even in cases where one does not feel like.

10. Keep a journal.

It is advisable to keep a journal where one can write the problems, hopes, aspirations and thoughts. This helps one to reduce emotions stress and makes one have a balanced perspective on the situations that one is going through.

It is important to remember that menopause is a phase in life and one will get over it soon. Therefore, one should try to keep their relationships on an even keel. This can be done by taking part in relaxation techniques, exercising regularly, taking a balanced diet, being creative, and avoiding alcohol and tranquilizers. It is also advisable to keep a journal and avoid withdrawing from family and friends.
