Five Fun Ways to Keep Kids Entertained on a Rainy Spring Afternoon

An old song proclaims rainy days and Mondays get you down, but it doesn't have to be that way. Mondays are a fresh start to a new week and rainy days are an opportunity to have fun indoors. Discover five cool ways to keep your kids entertained on rainy spring days.

1. Art Challenges

Break out the markers, colored pencils, and paper to get an art contest started. Encourage more creativity with glue, school scissors, glitter, and crayons. Give the kids a theme, such as fairy tales or sports. Encourage them to create unique artwork based on the theme. Or read a favorite book together and do art projects based on the story.

2. Fort Building

Do you remember building forts with chairs and blankets as a kid? Now kids have fantastic fort building kits that help them build unique forts as big as their imaginations. From a princess' castle to a pirate's boat, there are unlimited opportunities for movement, creativity, and fun when your kids build a fort on a rainy afternoon.

3. Board Games

Modern kids are accustomed to playing handheld games and computer games. Mix up the monotony by breaking out your old board games. Play checkers, chess, Monopoly, Hungry Hippos, and other timeless favorites.

4. Poetry Readings

Rainy days are also perfect for writing assignments. Encourage your kids to write five fun lines that rhyme. Or teach them how to write a haiku, which is a short and sweet poem that follows a simple, three-line format. Read your poetry aloud and share your ideas.

5. Exercising

If the kids can't sit still, break out your old exercise DVDs and get moving! Do aerobics and explain what legwarmers were. If you don't have DVDs, go online and play some exercise routines. Another option is to do jumping jacks or squat thrusts and see how many everyone can do correctly.

Rainy days can be just as fun as sunny ones with a bit of creativity!
