SUN LOVERS HAVEN # 4  ST. LUCIA

One of the advantages of traveling to St. Lucia or any of the Caribbean Islands, is its proximity to the east coast. Just a few hours of  jetting and you’re in paradise.

St. Lucia is simply stunning. Located midway down the eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, this exotic destination is only 14 miles wide and 27 miles long. On the eastern shore of the island is the Atlantic Ocean while its west coast delivers the calmer seas of the Caribbean.

Its official tourism guidebook states: “In natural beauty, St. Lucia seems like an island plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean. Its dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soar 2,000 feet up from the sea, sheltering magnificent rain forests where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish. Brilliantly-plumed tropical birds abound, including endangered species like the indigenous St. Lucia parrot. The rainforest is broken only by verdant fields and orchards of banana, coconut, mango, and papaya trees.”

And I couldn’t agree more about the awe-inspiring beauty of the juxtaposition between the breathtaking shores and the lush forest. We went biking in the woods and hiking up the mountain trails to capture the magnificent landscape from a bird’s-eye view. Wind sailing and surfing was also a popular activity on the island. We didn’t get to enjoy these but it sure looked like fun!

Our trip to St. Lucia also marked our first ever scuba diving experience. Conveniently, there was a dive school on premise at the Sandals Resort. We let our spirit for adventure take over and set out to take beginners diving lessons. While the scuba diving experience was monumental for us, it being our first ever, I’d be lying if I say the underwater scenery blew me away. Even for a newbie like me, having seen pictures taken by some avid scuba diving friends, my experience paled in comparison. But it was an exhilarating moment nonetheless. Based on first hand experience, I recommend sticking to other water activities. As I mentioned, there’s plenty to choose from on the island. If you’re in relaxation mode, it’s also not a bad idea to lounge by the beautiful pool, pina colada in one hand and that book you’ve always promised to read in the other. Or you can sidle up to the bar and chat up some new friends with calypso music wafting in the background. And that’s the beauty of island get-aways. You can party with just your swimsuit on.
