DIY Christmas Gift Idea: Have Your Toddler Make These Fun Canvas Snowmen

When it comes to Christmas, I LOVE doing homemade decor and gifts with the little guy. And I think it teaches him something that goes far beyond the commercialized version of Christmas. So when I find fun ideas that we can create on our own, I try to channel my inner-Martha Stewart and take advantage of the fact that we can’t go outside right now. Because…snow. And cold.

So the other day, I was out picking up some crafting supplies when I got an awesome deal on a three pack of 12″ by…

I Love Finding Random Photos

So today, Ricky and I wrapped up a super fun (and adorable!) Christmas decor (or DIY Christmas gift) project that was an absolute blast. And when I started uploading the photos during naptime, I realized that it has been a looooong time since I’ve actually uploaded anything from our fancy camera. I guess that the wonders of Instagram made me lazy.

But today, my friends, is your day. Because today is the day that I share with you the wonders of what I found.

Basically my child…

12 Ways I’m Making Christmas Totally Magical for My Two Year Old

As Ricky gets older and really understands what “Christmas” means, I’ve found myself getting really into the Christmas spirit. Decorating, gift planning and most of all: SANTA PLANNING.

This is really the first year that Ricky gets who Santa is. Although he did yell at me when I told him we were decorating for Jesus’s birthday to tell me that all the decorations were his.

It’s the whole “mine” syndrome. He’s definitely my kid.

Anyway – planning how to make Santa real and…

A Boy and His Dog

Ricky and Bruno – a boy and his dog.

The two of them have this brotherly companionship that I can’t seem to put my finger on. Sometimes, if Bruno tries to give him kisses or gets on ‘his’ couch, Ricky becomes a bear.

“No no no, Bruno! Mine! My couch! Get off my couch!”

But sometimes, they end up like this. And it’s this little piece of bliss in my heart that makes me want to cuddle up with them...See…

When Your Kid Gets Sick, You Can't Be Superwoman. Sorry Mamas.

Do you ever have those days that just leave you feeling like you’re ready to fall apart?

Today is one of those days at my house. After a crazy few weeks of work and snow prep, a sick toddler, a sick mama and just running on super little sleep in general, I had a meltdown.

Ok, not really a meltdown. But I just felt like such a failure.

You see, when your child is sick, there is no room for anything else. When they’re awake, they need your full attention. When they sleep,…

Preparing for Snowmageddon: All the Winter Necessities When You Live in the Frigid Tundra

So my child didn’t sleep last night. Ear infections + snow seem to coincide with each other all too frequently. So at 4 AM, while I was still trying to convince my two year old to take yet another dose of Motrin to quell his fever and actually go back to sleep, I was intermittently chatting with the hubs while he was out on site and watching (more) snow fall from the sky.

And thinking about all of the snow gear we had stocked up on for this winter.

Winter = lots of gear in…

There’s No Business Like Snow Business

Snow.

OMG. Snow.

Winter is a big part of our life here in the frigid tundra. Even more so in my family, because our livelihood is based on it.

We own a snow business. From October through May, it dictates our life. No, we don’t typically get snow in October, but that’s prep season.

So we’re supposed to get six to twelve inches today. Now that’s a good amount of snow for anytime in the season – but for early November – and our first snowfall of the year – it’s…

Raising Toddlers: A Lockdown Drill. REALLY?

Last week, I read this post somewhere – maybe on the Huffington Post? – about a teacher, recounting how her school prepares for a lockdown drill. You know, the preparation for thewhat if a shooter comes to the building kind of drill.

It brought an immense level of fear to my heart – that little preschoolers shouldn’t have to worry that some asshole is going to become a complete psychopath and terrorize them, leaving them fighting to LIVE.

At that moment, I realized…

WAHM: Separating Your Work Life and Family Life

One of the hardest things about being a WAHM is the fact that you’re likely working out of your home a lot of the time – which makes separation of work life and family life really hard. Trust me from experience, my office is in my basement. And it took me a long time to really understand that when I’m working, I need to treat my day like I’m sitting in an office downtown, where a lot of “life” distractions wouldn’t exist. If I didn’t do that, it would be far too easy to get distracted by the…

10 Things You Didn’t Realize Changed When You Became a Mom – Until They Already Happened

The other day I was looking back on the last four years of my life. And I came to this realization that so much has changed since Rick and I got engaged. I’m not quite sure when everything happened, because I think it was this slow movement over time. So to commemmorate my acceptance – or rather, slow relization – of all the things that have changed in the last two and a half years, I give you the list of 10 things you didn’t realize changed when you became a mom – until it was too…

Life After Stillbirth: Our First Christmas Without Her

Christmas is my favorite time of year. Especially now that Ricky is our life. Making Christmas amazing and magical for him is my goal.

So usually, I start taking out a few Christmas decorations the weekend after Halloween. This year, with Halloween falling on a Friday, I decided to wait another week – besides, I had really wanted to get our laundry room and entry way deep cleaned and organized – which included a lot more stuff to do than I had initially planned.

Instead, I…

Pregnancy Happens: Stephanie’s Birth Story

Pregnancy Changes Things

I always assumed I’d be the type of person who’d get an epidural at the first sign of contraction pain.  I grew up playing into my girly fears surrounding discomfort and I was certain that a non-medicated birth was NOT for me.  But then I got pregnant.  And the world cracked open in a completely new way.

I went from showcasing my wussiness to embracing my womanhood.  Being pregnant empowered me and made me feel like I could do anything, and that…

Taking Advantage of Daylight Savings with an At-Home Spa Morning

It’s 9:30 AM on Sunday morning. The house is quiet: Hubs had to run to a job site and Ricky’s taking a morning nap {gasp!}.

I hear you. You’re wondering how the heck I got my two year old to actually take a morning nap. It wasn’t by force, guys. It was because he was up unGodly early on the one day out of the year we’re all supposed to sleep in.

Whoever invented Daylight Savings Time was playing a sick joke on toddler moms everywhere.

Out of bed at quarter to five, Ricky…

Preparing for Labor and Delivery: Newborn Babies Make the Pain Totally Worth It

There’s this big part of getting ready for labor and delivery that a lot of us forget – or just don’t know how – to do. I’m completely guilty of it. When I was pregnant with Ricky, I got prepared in the normal ways that you think of getting ready for the hospital: touring the facility, registering in advance, packing my hospital bag. But that didn’t really eliminate the anxiety that kept creeping in as we got closer and closer to my delivery date.

Fear of Delivery

I was…

Potty Training: Finding Middle Ground Between “Ready” and “Pulling Your Hair Out”

There is no roadmap

There is so much that people don’t tell you before you have kids. For the most part, I’ve been ok with this collective omission, with one major exception: potty training.

No one ever mentioned, even hinted at the horrors that awaited me with potty training.  I had two difficult birth experiences, a hard time with breast feeding my first, and 20 plus weeks of hormone injections with my second and nothing, nothing comes close to the misery…

Stylish Mom Accessories: Changing Things Up as the Season Change

Around this time of year, the weather starts to really change up here in the frigid tundra of Minnesota. As the leaves start dropping, so does the average temperature. In fact, today was a little bit of a shocker when Rick and I took the dogs out for a walk and had to wear hats, gloves and lots of layers. It’s a brisk 47 degrees today – and WINDY.

So that got me to thinking: being such a stylish mom (or at least, someone who on occasion tries to be one), what are some of my winter…

WAHM: Finding the Right Flexibility for Your Family

I was reading this story on BlogHer today – and at first, I sat here thinking…I don’t get it.

And then, I started to really think about it. And now, I just feel lucky to be a work-at-home-mom. Or really, to have the right set up for our family.

Working a 9-5, Monday through Friday wouldn’t work for us. My husband works…

Preparing for Delivery: Do You Really Need Those Childbirth Classes?

The first thing Rick asked me when we found out we were pregnant with Addison was, “We don’t have to take those stupid classes again, right?”

I can’t help but laugh thinking back to our experience with Ricky’s pregnancy. I was adamant, from day one, that we needed to go through the classes. And in some ways, they were definitely helpful. But coming into parenthood with the experience that I’ve had – and being very logical people – they weren’t overly…informative.

Basically,…

13 Weeks Pregnant: I’ve Got a Baby Belly

Today I had lunch with a few friends after bible study. To clarify, I didn’t make it to bible study because my 2 year old decided that 5 AM is a completely appropriate time to start our day. And then he crashed for a morning nap around 8:30. So we just met up for the “social” side of the morning.

As I was leaving, one of my friends told me that I look good, she couldn’t tell I was pregnant. And inside I was like, “Score! I’m effectively dressing my prego bod!”

Because, you…
