To My First Born

Dear Presley (my first roomie),
Our rental classified has been answered.  In about 4 months it is expected that two new roommates will be moving in.  We will be taken over by 20 more fingers, 20 more toes, 2 more mouths to feed and 2 more sets of unpredictable vocals.  I’m not sure of your feelings on this.  Our happy home has consisted of you, your bff Bella, Guiness, Lj, dad and me for two and a half years now.

I know it must be hard to understand at your age…

Existence Defined By Weeks. What Is That?

I am now 20 weeks along in my pregnancy.  I am only aware of this number because it was displayed on the screen at my last ultrasound, 19w5d. For those like me that don’t do math off the top of your head, that’s 5 months. I definitely told someone the other day that it was 4 months. It was later that night after having counted the weeks on my fingers that I realized I completely made that answer up.  I was tempted to email them and correct myself in the case that they noticed the week to…

Dear Friend.......

I'm sorry I didn't tell you we were going to try for another baby.  I get that this hurt you, but to be honest I don't think I knew how to tell you.  Our lives are so different, I wasn't sure how you'd take it or that you'd be happy for me.…

A Conversation with Children's Author Beverly Stowe McClure

When Beverly was a child she hated to read. Even though her eighth-grade teacher sent her poem “Stars” to a high school anthology and it was published in Young America Sings she hated to write. In spite of her rocky relationship with books, she managed to graduate from high school then attended Midwestern State…

Number Two on the Brain

I've got #2 on the brain. Not that number two. I'm talking baby number two. It's not a coincidence because lately it seems everyone is wondering if I'll have a second baby. I find this questioning only slightly less invasive than having  my belly felt up when I was pregnant. D2 turns two in November and whenever anyone asks me how old he is, it's always…

That time I forgot I had a baby. Okay, ONE of the times I forgot I had a baby.

Towards the end of my second pregnancy, I began searching for a cute diaper bag, preferably one which cost less than my car payment and would dress-up my maternity-jeans and stained tee-shirt postpartum uniform. Also, if I could find a bag with wide enough straps to cover-up one of my leaking breasts, well then, all the better!

“What...you’ve never seen a nursing woman leak through her shirt? Stop your… Continue

Preparation for Birth

Pregnancy, for most women lasts from 37-42 weeks, and while that seems
like a long time, it really is not. In that time, couples/families
become very involved in preparing for the birth, and I can't help but
wonder if families prepare enough...

What Every Pregnant Mom Needs to Know About Shoulder Dystocia

Although most pregnant women anticipate a normal, uncomplicated delivery, there are exceptions to the rules. A shoulder dystocia is one of the more frequent complications in the delivery room and unfortunately there is no sure-fire way to predict it.

A shoulder dystocia means that extra maneuvers must be done to deliver the baby’s shoulders. If not managed properly, the baby could sustain permanent injuries to its neck and arms. The most… Continue

.5 you never stood a chance

Tonight, though I obviously have 107,000 things that I ought to be doing, I have baby on the brain. I think it was the combo of visiting my friend and her new puppy( get your panties out of the bunch , I am not comparing your little miracles to tiny hairy beasts) and all this talk recently of whose pregnant and whose not. Anyways, apparently , I am in that stage of Motherhood where I have 2 perfect daughters and I am undecided about a third. OK, lets' be honest, brutally honest. Let's just rip… Continue

Every Wave Always Comes to Shore

My body is angry. It is resisting, pushing, shrinking back, lashing out. Angry. I guess I am too. At my body.

I know, I need to be gentle with myself. I need to accept, like my word of the year. It is hard to accept a body that fights you even when you sleep.

I am 38 weeks pregnant. My body is completely hijacked right now nurturing, growing, developing a human that needs everything I have to give to it. And so I do. I give my body everything it needs. I can't wait to see the… Continue

A Dog and a Baby

One of the most phenomenal stories regarding babies that I ever heard was reported on CNN in May 2005 and in the May 30, 2005 edition of Jet Magazine.

“A newborn baby abandoned in a Kenyan forest was saved by a stray dog who apparently carried her across a busy road and through a barbed wire fence to a shed where the infant was discovered nestled with a litter of puppies.” CBS News covered this story as well.

This baby girl was dressed… Continue
