Breast is best… but for who?

Now before all the breast feeding advocates get upset, please know that I am a huge supporter of breast feeding. I think that there are so many positive advantages to breastfeeding, however it needs to be a good fit for both mom and baby. For me, breastfeeding was not a good fit for anyone. I struggled with both my children and eventually threw in the towel after three months of frustration, tears and anger. Looking back it still bothers me that I had very little to no support from fellow…

Love Home - It Makes Work Worth Doing

It is fantastic to have a good home life because it makes going to work worth doing. For many people the biggest joy they have in life is the ability to come home at the end of a long day and get hugs and kisses from family members. It makes all the stresses of the day seem worthwhile when you have a loving home to return to each day.

The movie The Wiz had a great song about home. One of my favorite lines from the song is, "When I think of home I think of a place where there…

Potty Time

View original post at Mommy Dearest

I bought Eliza a potty this week. I figure we should get her interested in the potty and see what happens. She's always (in her 17 long months of life) been pretty good about making transitions and wanting to move to the next level, so I'm hoping she just kind of figures out this potty stuff on her own. I'm pretty sure she can. I'll just sit back and…

Nifty Niacin - It's Not Just a Word on Your Cereal Box!

If you would have asked me a few years ago what niacin was, I would have likely said it was one of those funny sounding vitamins that I used to read on the side of the cereal box in the morning.  And it is.  But it was only recently that I realized just how important this little gem of a vitamin really…

7 frequently forgotten details that could ruin your trip

Nothing is worse than having your credit card declined, especially when you're trying to buy your family subway passes at a kiosk under Times Square surrounded by early morning commuters.

Don't get me wrong, the people around us were very understanding, if misguided in assuming we'd run up our line of credit. I think someone did offer to help pay our fare in the confusion, but just about everyone else was focused on catching their train.

It didn't help that when you're that far…

Watch Your Steps, Lady!

Wordless Wednesday as some blogs post up on this day... but as for me, it is a OUCH OUCH day...

Very early this morning I went for my breakie in a not-so-familiar food court.  It was quite crowded and most of the tables were occupied... Instead of looking for a table first, my eyes were up on the stalls' banners .... doing just that, I paid the price... cos....

All of a sudden, my right leg twisted and I came tumbling down on the floor...then only I realized that there…

What Can I Do To Keep My Child or Teenager from Lying to Me Constantly?

Teenagers begin exerting their own voices and want to begin making their own choices.  Their choices may not be the choice that you agree with and they may cover up their actions to avoid getting caught.  If they are caught, they may attempt to cover up what they did and begin telling their parents a stream…

Have kids, will travel (top ten tips on traveling with kids)

I admit I am a bit of a worry wart. Sometimes I sweat the small stuff. I can’t help myself but agonize over details. But nothing makes me more anxious than traveling with my 3 kids, aged 8 and 4 year old twins. Especially traveling 18 hours halfway across the globe!

The last time my husband and I traveled overseas with child, was 6 years ago when our now 8-yr old was only 2. Now that our family has gone from party of 3 to party of five, the stress level for traveling has gone up…

How to Lose Your Child in a Store and Handle It Badly

We go through 4 to 6 gallons of milk a week in this house.  No, I am not lying.  We just do.  I've accepted it and am appropriately docking college funds to compensate.  So to say we have to hit the store more than once a week is almost redundant.  But we do.

I try to plan ahead, buying 4 gallons at a time.  But sometimes - usually right at bedtime when all three are screaming for some milk and I am at my wit's end - I open the fridge where I attempt to stock up and it is bare.  Bare…

The moment I realized that I had become a Mean Mommy.

So there is a moment in every mom’s life that she realizes that she has indeed been, as I describe it, a ‘mean mommy’. There was a defining moment in my life as a mother, where I realized that I indeed had turned into a mean mommy, and I decided to do something about it. I vowed to never judge or criticize another mom again, cause you never know where life will take you or what challenges you and your family will endure. This will make more sense as your read about my own ‘mean mommy’…

Green on the Cheap

When I made the decision, really made the decision, to adopt a greener lifestyle, I had people say to me “I’d love to go green but I can’t afford it.”  Have you ever said that?  Thought that?  If so, I will refrain from telling you what I said in return.

The point is that if you think about it,…

Soccer Mom Militia

So this past summer I thought it would be a good idea to enroll my son in soccer. He loved playing in the yard and was really quite good at it so I thought it would boost his self esteem. I knew by this time that he had some anxiety, but thought since he loved playing soccer that it might be okay. Alright, so I know what you are all thinking…why would this be any different from swimming? Well, I guess I thought if we removed the whole water aspect it would be okay. It wasn’t. And now I had a…

Copping Out

The other morning, as I was escorting my twins to kindergarten, a friend started chatting up the cop who was acting as the crossing guard.

“How do you know him so well?” I asked.

“He almost gave me a ticket the other day,” she said with a wink.

Clearly, she'd charmed the pants off the officer—something I’ve never quite learned to do.

My relationship with law enforcement has always been a bit more contentious than that and began, as it does for…

How to Easily Teach Your Kids to Save, Spend, and Share Money

By Anne Carr

The other day we were in Target and an automated piggy bank made by a big brand caught our eye. Our youngest daughter really wanted it! The piggy bank would count all of the money automatically as your child put more and more money into it. On one hand we thought it was…
